The earliest Web pages were plain, consisting mostly of text with links on a gray or white background. Eventually, typefaces changed, and colors and static images were added. In 1997, Macromedia purchased a software program known as FutureSplash and changed the name to Flash. Flash is a multimedia program developed especially for the Internet and the World Wide Web, and it has changed the look of and added interactivity to Web pages. Today, it is a popular program for creating movies, Web graphics, and other multimedia elements.
